At Moon Island Arts, Harry Potter holds a special place in our hearts. Every time we open the books or watch the movies, we are instantly transported to the magical world of Hogwarts. We love that the stories are filled with adventure, mystery, friendship, and of course… magic.
Inspired by J.K. Rowling’s unforgettable characters and settings, we’ve created several Harry Potter movie art prints which are available in our store. Each design reflects our favorite characters and elements of the Wizarding World, making them perfect for fans who also want to have a little magic in their poster collection.
This blog post offers a closer look at our Moon Island Arts Harry Potter posters. If you read until the end, you may even find a few hints of what’s coming next!
Our Harry Potter Ensemble Series
At Moon Island Arts, we are endlessly inspired by the unique characters that feature in the Harry Potter movies. This inspiration led us to create our Harry Potter movie posters ‘Hogwarts 1991’ and ‘Hogwarts 1992,’ which include a full cast of main characters from their respective films. We really wanted to feature all our favorite main characters, which is why we chose the Class Photo style—it allowed us to celebrate each one in a single, iconic scene.
We can’t criticize Drew Struzan’s famous Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone poster; it’s one of our favorite posters and pretty much perfect! However, we did feel that subsequent Harry Potter movie posters, which relied mostly on photographs of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, lacked the inclusion of other unforgettable movie characters.
Although we can’t incorporate every part, person, and creature from a movie, we love to include movie easter eggs in the posters that true fans of Harry Potter movies will enjoy.
Hogwarts 1991
Hogwarts 1991 is a group portrait movie poster of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone character cast, set in the hallways of Hogwarts. It’s a customer favorite Moon Island Arts Harry Potter art print.
We wanted to show not only Harry, Ron, and Hermione but also the Weasley twins Fred and George, Harry’s nemesis Draco Malfoy and his cronies Crabbe and Goyle, and Neville Longbottom, because “it takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.”
Hogwarts also wouldn’t be the same without Severus Snape or Minerva McGonagall, respective heads of houses of Slytherin and Gryffindor, who take spots in our movie poster on both sides of headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
We also couldn’t leave out Argus Filch and Rubeus Hagrid, the caretaker and groundskeeper at Hogwarts respectively. Last but not least, Professor Quirrel is also included in the portrait. He plays a key role in The Sorcerer’s Stone and is the first of many Defense Against The Dark Arts teachers we’ll get to know and love (or hate) as part of the movie series.
We also made a Hogwarts 1991 Daily Prophet variant in greyscale. More on that below!
Hogwarts 1992
Hogwarts 1992 is a group portrait Harry Potter movie poster that we made for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The background for this portrait is Dumbledore’s office in Hogwarts.
Much of the main cast in this poster is the same as Hogwarts 1991, including our three heroes Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and Neville, Malfoy and the Weasley twins in the front row. We also have Dumbledore, Hagrid, Filch, Snape, and McGonagall in the back. New additions in the student row include Ginny Weasley who’s clutching Tom Riddle’s diary, and Harry’s number one fan Colin Creevey, who’s holding the camera that saves his life partway through the movie.
In the back row we’ve added Lucius Malfoy, whose appearances in the movie are limited but whose role is critical to the plot of the Chamber of Secrets. He holds his snake-head staff and looks out of the poster with his signature icy stare. We also included Gilderoy Lockhart, one of the funniest characters in the series, with his flashy and overly self-confident smile.
We also feature two magical creatures that we couldn’t leave out of this art print: Dobby the mischievous, caring, and self-sacrificing house-elf, as well as Fawkes the phoenix, who Harry first meets as Fawkes is bursting into flames as part of this rebirth life cycle.
Similar to our previous Harry Potter movie poster, we made a Daily Prophet variant for our Hogwarts 1992 poster as well.
Harry Potter movie poster Daily Prophet variants
As me mentioned above, for all of the Hogwarts group portrait posters we’ve released a Daily Prophet variant. This is a greyscale / black and white Harry Potter movie poster that looks like a photo out of the wizarding newspaper, the Daily Prophet. In order to maximize the newspapery vibe we printed the Variant on a different paper, using Canson Infinity Edition Etching Rag paper.
Although it’s a static image on our poster, at first glance you might believe that the moment is in motion! Don’t worry, Rita Skeeter was not involved in the writing of this article.
We hope that each of these characters and creatures that we feature in our Harry Potter movie posters, as well as our easter eggs and poster variants, transport you to your favorite movie scenes and most importantly, brings you as much joy as it brings us!
The Journey Begins Poster
The Journey Begins was one of our first Harry Potter movie posters at Moon Island Arts. It was inspired by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (or Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone). The movie release marked the start of a ten-year movie-watching adventure as Harry Potter movies were released between 2001 and 2011.
‘The Journey Begins’ features some of our favorite settings that make the Wizarding World so special. It shows the red Hogwarts Express train and the arched bridge it crosses to reach Hogwarts, Hogwarts castle with the boathouse, and the expansive lake and grounds surrounding Hogwarts. (Hint: we also love Privet Drive as a Harry Potter movie setting! Stay tuned!)
No one needs convincing that Hogwarts Castle is a majestic place. Its architectural grandeur and illuminated silhouette, particularly in its first appearance in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, have established it as an unforgettable cultural icon. We knew we had to include Hogwarts into this Harry Potter movie poster.
The grounds of Hogwarts also play an important role in the movies. In “A Journey Begins” we wanted to capture its expansiveness as a symbol of the freedom and new beginning that Harry feels upon arriving at his new school. In the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry doesn’t know yet that one day on these grounds he’ll be running from giant spiders and werewolves through the forbidden forest, fighting a dragon, or flying a Hippogriff over the spacious lake.
The Hogwarts Express is also important, as it symbolizes for us the transition between the Muggle world and the Wizarding World, and the beginning of an incredible adventure. What we wouldn’t do for a ticket to Platform 9 ¾ when we were first reading the books!
We can also thank this train for bringing our favorite trio, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, together in the first movie.
We hope our depiction of the Hogwarts grounds, Hogwarts Castle, and Hogwarts Express train can capture your imagination and bring you back to some of your favorite Harry Potter scenes that will unfold in the subsequent movies.
Most of all, we hope this alternative Harry Potter movie poster evokes a sense of adventure and wonder like it does for us.
